It’s National Cancer Survivors Day. Anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer is defined as a cancer survivor, regardless of if they are just starting the cancer journey, are considered NED, are in the midst of therapies, or have been declared cancer free for years and years.

The healing journey is a marathon not a sprint.
And it takes LOTS of mental & emotional work just like the physical load we all know the pictures of.

Today’s theme for National Cancer Survivors Day is Celebrate Life! 🥰🎉❤️

I’m taking a moment of gratitude today to celebrate in thankfulness how long I’ve been able to thrive beyond a breast cancer diagnosis and for all the incredible love, support, and encouragement I’ve had all along the way so far!

I’m sharing some of my “breathing affirmations” on the 6th slide that help me be present & reset my mind and body in harder moments of cancer life. I typically try to say the first inhale phrase while I’m breathing in, and likewise the exhale phase while I’m breathing out. Sometimes, I just think the phrase internally while I’m breathing. Do what you need to do!

While cancer can really suck & be really hard,
today we can pause to celebrate life.

The Supporters:
-the first person you call to share the news because they are “your person”
-travels to come help you prepare your home for life during treatment / surgery recovery
-sets up a Meal train / plan / meal gift card train
-washes & dries your hair when you can’t
-sets up a fundraiser for you
-gets an Instacart grocery order sent to your door
-sends you an instagram DM to say they want to Venmo you some $$$ to help with cancer life costs
-sends out prayers & all the happy healing vibes
-graciously takes you to lunch at one of the places you feel good about eating at
-sits with you quietly in the waiting room

🌟 Harnessing the POWER of YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS in Your Cancer Journey 🌟

Hey fellow cancer thrivers! Let’s talk about something crucial: your MEDICAL RECORDS. 📑✨

Here’s Why It Can Matter to Have a COPY of YOUR OWN RECORDS

1. EMPOWERMENT: Your records hold vital info about your specific case which can HELP YOU to make INFORMED DECISIONS about your care.

2. CONTINUITY OF CARE: We get to BUILD our OWN CARE TEAM. And that means bringing in pracitioners that may be in different clinics/different parts of the country/world. Having your copy of your records means you can get them to your new team member quickly.

3. ADVOCACY: Understanding your case helps you ADVOCATE CONFIDENTLY for YOUR NEEDS. Being able to see the numbers, the test results, the exact names of things can bring clarity to know what you need to ask for, or ask about, or potentially even deny whether temporarily or indefinitely.

TIPS for GETTING YOUR RECORDS

🔍 START BEFORE YOU NEED IT: Ask the front desk, “What is the process for getting a copy of my pathology/scan report/lab results?” Follow their process and Request the records when #you are being tested or when you are finishing up that day at the clinic. If you are seeking older records, call with specific request in mind (do you have a certain month/year and/or name of records/results you are looking for?)

📞 FOLLOW UP: It’s okay to CALL and ask when you can expect to get a copy of your report. Be kind. Gather the info & then if you are picking up records in person, call the day you are planning to go to CONFIRM they are READY for you.

📝 KEEP A BINDER: Put all of your records together im ONE BINDER or FOLDER so you know everything is in one place. (I have other posts that show my mega binder.) I organize my binder by TYPE of RECORD, then CHRONOLOGY.

➡️ Your medical records are more than just documents; they can be a guiding light on your healing journey. Don’t be afraid to ask for your own copy!

Well…it’s World Cancer Day. Who woulda thought

Well…it’s World Cancer Day. Who woulda thought we’d be in this cancer club?! Not me! (Thanks Paul Rudd for your comedy bits.)

Many of us on this health journey with a cancer diagnosis know about the gaps in cancer care, education, and the resources it takes to support our healing & recurrence risk reduction practices.

There are a variety of gaps like these throughout the world. Thinking about it on a global scale can feel daunting & out of one’s hands as we bring awareness to “Close the Gap” (this year’s World Cancer Day theme).

The GOOD NEWS is that there are things we as individuals can do in our own lives by spreading the word on the things that matter most to you:
-if you are like me & think anticancer NUTRITION is important, then we share about those things & be intentional about choosing our GOOD NOURISHMENT to FUEL our cells.

-if you think early DETECTION is key, then share what types of detection you’ve found work best for your case & how it might help others (I’m a fan of looking at a body of results and seeing the overall trend, not just one single source for those of us living with cancer & making decisions every season on our cancer journey & yes I mean specific scans, bloodwork, etc.)

-if you think INTEGRATIVE CARE to help SUPPORT the whole person & whole body is best for THRIVING 💪, then share about some of your FAV WAYS to do that in your case (I have lots of tips & resources right here on my IG on integrative care if you need to know about that type of care).

We might not feel like we can #closethegap of disparities all across the globe, but we can help share the insights we’ve gleaned on our own cancer journeys and make a positive difference in our own circles. 🤍
